In 1910, the most popular brands were Pall Mall, Sweet Caporals, Piedmont, Helmar and Fatima. By 1917 there are now 3 national brands of cigarettes on the US market: Lucky Strike, Camel cigarettes and Chesterfield. In 1921, RJ Reynolds spends a whooping $8 million in advertising, mainly on Camel cigarettes. They also launch the highly successful “I’d Walk a Mile for a Camel” ad slogan. By 1923, Camel cigarettes control 45% of the U.S. cigarette market! The following year, Phillip Morris begins to push Marlboro cigarettes as a woman’s cigarette that is a “Mild as May”! camel online By 1930, the most popular brands were Lucky Strike, Camel cigarettes, Chesterfield, Old Gold and Raleigh. camel

I find it interesting that the Budweiser Clydesdales (which appeared in the Fantasy of Lights Parade) are considered an attraction for “family fun.” What would be the reaction if Joe camel online cigarettes were on the next float? After all, they are both advertising icons for adult products. One tries to sell beer; the other, cigarettes. Are we not deluged enough with ads for alcohol that we also to need to push it in front of the children at a parade? Alcohol-related car crashes are the No. 1 cause of teenage death in this country, and we need to celebrate beer with our youth? Some would argue that cigarettes are worse because they cause cancer, but a recent article in the Detroit Free Press reported that alcohol consumption increases the risk of six types of cancer. Admittedly, tobacco also causes cancer, but a 10-year study by the World Health Organization found no link between secondhand smoke and cancer or other diseases. (You can look it up!)
